What a Primary Care Provider Actually Does for You

Primary care provider consulting with a patient about their health

Table of Contents

A primary care provider is your first stop and ongoing partner for most of your health needs, from annual checkups and preventive screenings to managing ongoing conditions and treating everyday illnesses. Think of primary care as the home base for your health, the provider who knows your full picture and helps coordinate everything else. As a family nurse practitioner, this whole-person, relationship-based care is exactly what I offer.

I’m Krystal McIntyre, FNP-C at ChiroMed Crawfordsville. If you don’t have a primary care provider, or aren’t quite sure what one does, this is for you.

Your Health’s Home Base

The biggest value of primary care is continuity. Rather than seeing a different provider for every concern, you have one provider who knows your history, your health conditions, your medications, and your goals. That complete picture leads to better, more coordinated care.

When I know you over time, I can spot changes, catch potential issues early, and give advice that fits your actual life. This ongoing relationship is what makes primary care so valuable, and it’s the part I find most rewarding.

What Is a Family Nurse Practitioner?

Many people are used to seeing a physician for primary care, so it’s a fair question. A nurse practitioner is an advanced practice registered nurse with graduate-level education and clinical training. Nurse practitioners examine patients, diagnose and treat illnesses, order and interpret tests, prescribe medications, and manage ongoing conditions.

The “F” in FNP stands for family, which means my training covers patients across the lifespan. The “C” means I’m nationally board certified. In practice, that means I can be the primary care provider for you and your family, and I refer to specialists when your care calls for it.

Preventive Care and Wellness

A big part of what I do is help you stay well, not just treat you when you’re sick. Preventive care includes annual wellness exams, physicals, health screenings, and risk assessments designed to catch problems early or prevent them altogether.

These visits are a chance to check in on your overall health, review your risk factors, and make a plan to keep you healthy. Prevention is one of the most powerful things we can do together, and it’s far easier to address issues early than after they’ve progressed.

Managing Ongoing Conditions

For patients living with chronic conditions, primary care is essential. I provide ongoing management for conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, and thyroid disorders, with regular monitoring built in.

Managing a chronic condition well requires consistent, coordinated care over time. Having a provider who tracks your condition, adjusts your plan as needed, and helps you stay on top of it makes a real difference in your long-term health. This is one of the most important things primary care offers.

Everyday Illness and Sick Visits

When you’re feeling under the weather, primary care is there for that too. I handle sick visits for common illnesses, including colds, flu, sinus infections, sore throats, urinary tract infections, and other everyday concerns.

Having a provider who already knows you means these visits are more efficient and personal. Instead of explaining your whole history to someone new, you’re seen by someone who already understands your health.

A Wide Range of Services Under One Roof

My practice covers a broad scope, which means many of your needs can be met in one place. That includes women’s health, mental health management, weight loss support, migraine management, in-office procedures like joint and trigger point injections, and more.

Being able to address many needs with one trusted provider saves you from being bounced between different offices. It also means your care is coordinated, since I see how all the pieces of your health fit together.

Primary Care, Urgent Care, or the ER?

Knowing where to go saves time and gets you the right level of care. Here’s a simple way to think about it:

  • Primary care is the right call for checkups, ongoing conditions, medication questions, everyday illnesses, and new symptoms that are not severe.
  • Urgent care fits minor injuries or illnesses that need attention when our office is closed.
  • Call 911 or go to the ER for chest pain or pressure, trouble breathing, signs of a stroke such as facial drooping, arm weakness, or trouble speaking, severe bleeding, or a serious injury.

If you are having thoughts of harming yourself, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline any time, day or night.

What to Bring to Your First Visit

A little preparation helps us make the most of your first appointment:

  • Your insurance card and a photo ID
  • A current list of your medications, vitamins, and supplements
  • Records from previous providers, or their contact information
  • Your family health history, as best you know it
  • A short list of questions or concerns you want to cover

You can find intake details on our new patients page.

Whole-Person, Relationship-Based Care

What I care about most is treating you as a whole person, not just a set of symptoms or a diagnosis. I believe the best care comes from building a genuine relationship and understanding your unique story, goals, and challenges.

Healthcare works best when you feel comfortable asking questions, participating in decisions, and partnering with your provider. That’s the kind of care I strive to provide every day, and it’s why so many patients value having a primary care home.

Accessible and Welcoming

I’m currently accepting new patients, and I accept most insurance plans, including Medicare and Indiana Medicaid. My goal is to make quality primary care accessible to our Crawfordsville community and the surrounding area.

And because primary care sits here alongside ChiroMed’s chiropractic and rehabilitation services, patients have access to an unusually well-rounded team under one roof.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I see my primary care provider?

Most adults benefit from a yearly wellness visit. If you have an ongoing condition, we’ll plan check-ins based on what your health needs.

Is a nurse practitioner the same as a doctor?

No, but nurse practitioners provide many of the same primary care services, including exams, diagnosis, testing, and prescriptions. I also coordinate with physicians and specialists when needed.

Can I see a chiropractor and primary care provider in the same office?

Yes. At ChiroMed, primary care and chiropractic care are under one roof, so your providers can easily share information and coordinate your care.
