Joint and trigger point injections are in-office treatments that deliver targeted relief directly to the source of your pain. Joint injections address inflammation and pain in specific joints like the shoulder, knee, or hip, while trigger point injections release tight, painful knots in the muscle. For the right patient, they can provide meaningful relief when other approaches haven’t been enough.
I’m Krystal McIntyre, the Family Nurse Practitioner at ChiroMed Crawfordsville, and these injections are one of the services patients ask me about most. Let me walk you through what they are and who tends to benefit.
What Are Joint Injections?
A joint injection delivers medication directly into a painful, inflamed joint. Rather than taking something oral that travels through your whole body, the treatment goes right where it’s needed. This targeted approach can reduce inflammation and ease pain at the source.
In my practice, I use joint injections for a range of areas, including the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, SI joint, knee, and ankle. Each joint has its own considerations, and part of my job is determining whether an injection is the right fit for your specific situation.
The goal is often to reduce pain enough that you can move better, participate in physical therapy or rehabilitation, and get back to your daily life. For many patients, that window of relief is exactly what they need to make progress.
What Are Trigger Point Injections?
Trigger points are those tight, painful knots that form in muscle. You’ve probably felt one, a firm, tender spot that doesn’t release no matter how much you rub or stretch it. These knots can refer pain to other areas and cause ongoing discomfort.
A trigger point injection delivers medication directly into that knot to help it release and reduce the pain. For stubborn trigger points that haven’t responded to other treatments, this direct approach can break the cycle.
I commonly use trigger point injections for conditions like plantar fasciitis, carpal tunnel, and tennis or golfer’s elbow, where a specific area of muscle or soft tissue is driving the pain.
What Conditions Do These Injections Help?
The range is fairly wide, which is part of why they’re such a useful tool. Joint injections can help with arthritis-related joint pain, bursitis, tendonitis, and inflammation in specific joints. Trigger point injections address muscle-related pain, including certain cases of plantar fasciitis, carpal tunnel, and elbow tendon issues.
What these treatments have in common is that they target a specific, identifiable source of pain. They work best when we can pinpoint exactly where the problem is coming from, which is why a thorough evaluation always comes first.
Who Is a Good Candidate?
Injections tend to be a good fit for patients who have a specific, localized source of pain that hasn’t responded well to more conservative measures like rest, activity changes, or oral options. They can also help patients who need enough relief to participate in a rehabilitation program.
That said, they aren’t right for everyone or every situation. Certain health conditions, medications, and circumstances affect whether an injection is appropriate. This is something I evaluate carefully for each patient, because your safety and your overall health picture always come first.
My approach is never one-size-fits-all. I look at your full health history, your specific pain, and your goals before recommending anything.
What to Expect During the Visit
One of the advantages of these injections is that they’re done right in the office, so there’s no need to go elsewhere. The process itself is usually quick.
Before anything, we talk through your history and I examine the area to confirm the injection is the right choice and to identify the precise location. During the injection, you may feel some pressure or a brief sting, but it’s generally well tolerated. Afterward, I’ll give you guidance on what to expect and how to care for the area.
I always take time to answer questions and make sure you understand the plan. Feeling informed and comfortable with your care is something I care about deeply.
How Injections Fit Into a Bigger Plan
Injections are rarely the entire answer on their own. They’re most effective as part of a broader plan that addresses why the pain developed in the first place. Relief from an injection can create an opportunity to work on the underlying issues through movement, strengthening, and lifestyle adjustments.
At ChiroMed Crawfordsville, I have the advantage of working alongside our chiropractic and rehabilitation team. For musculoskeletal pain, that means we can combine approaches when it makes sense, addressing both the immediate pain and the root cause together under one roof.
Let’s Find Out If Injections Could Help You
If you’re dealing with persistent joint or muscle pain in Crawfordsville that hasn’t responded to other approaches, joint or trigger point injections may be worth discussing. The first step is a conversation and an evaluation to see whether they’re a good fit for your situation.
